Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are just like any other students you would find in any number of schools across any city and state in the country. They love sports, superheroes, princesses, music and action! They have a need to be loved, appreciated, noticed, shouted out and cared for. They are just as capable as any other students in the world. The only thing that many of them lack is resources.
In a day and age where technology is changing the way we see and interact with the world around us, I'm hoping to change the type of education we provide with it!
The materials in this project are designed to help give my students experiences they normally would not have access to and make their educational experience as engaging and hands on as possible! I hope you'll consider helping us get there.
My Project
This project is designed to give the students of my school access and opportunities. As a physical educator, my goal is to create a space that will help students foster a love of being physically active and an understanding as to why that's important. In order to do that, I have to tap into areas that will excite every single student.
Not every student loves basketball or soccer, but EVERY student has some kind of physical activity that they will enjoy doing for a lifetime on their own; in some cases, they just haven't experienced it yet.
That's where this project comes in! I want to move my students' PE experience away from traditional games and team sports and teach them ways to move that are available to them in their own respective environments, but maybe haven't had access to yet.
Skateboarding is not only a "new age" skill that has been popularized through things like ESPN's X Games, but is also a practical, healthy, FREE way to travel around New York City. Acquiring this skill not only adds a new physical tool, but it gives them access to explore the areas around the block they live on.
The laminator is an addition I'm hoping to add to our program to increase aesthetics and continue celebrating our students. Being able to preserve skill cue charts, vocab words, student of the month pictures/certificates, etc will help to make my vision for my PE program last long term. I can't laminate them at school because the laminate rolls for the big, old school laminators "cost too much money". This will give me a way to continue celebrating my students and giving them access to a learning space they deserve!
