Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 6th graders in a brand new middle school program in our K-8 school that is currently K-6. They come to me for math and technology classes. My students are an energetic bunch that love collaborating with each other. They are hard workers who have built close friendships within our grade. They love to support each other both academically and socially. I hope to provide collaborative and innovative activities and materials as they embark on their first year of middle school.
My Project
The Raspberry Pi is a tiny computer that can be coded using Scratch and Python. My students will learn how to code cameras to take timelapse photos, the Sense Hat to program LED lights, and the Explorer hat to control motors and robotics.
Students will learn the basics of physical computing in order to build their programming knowledge and build their own creations.
The Makey Makey kits will serve as an introduction to physical computing. They are simple to use and can even be shared with our elementary school students.
Coding and programming are essential 21st century skills that our students need for the future. More than half of the jobs with high demand in 2018 did not exist in 2007, so we need to prepare students for creative, technological fields.
