Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Next year will be my second year of teaching, and what I would like to do more than anything is make sure that the students at 126 have an opportunity for physical activity. Growing up sports motivated me to excel both on and off the field/court. Additionally, this year out of my 13 students 4 are severely obese (based on BMI). This affects all of their behaviors including the learning potential. Part of the problem is that my school lacks basic sports equipment and has no sports program. My plan is to have a one hour club after school which includes introduction to sports for young students and rigorous exercise for fifth/sixth graders. This club will run 3 days a week, beginning with soccer and yoga in the fall. Three other teachers and I have discussed such a program, but without the equipment it is not possible. I would be very grateful if you would consider funding this project. I can promise you that exposing the youngsters to physical activity will improve their lifestyle and their learning potential.
