Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The majority of students in our school are dis-engaged students from low-income, urban families. These students experience daily stress that impacts their ability to stay engaged and to learn.

Can you image being a child and having no visual record of your high school experiences?

Or can you imagine as a parent not have a photograph of your child playing a sport or being part of a peep rally or the school musical...or just a picture of them being a student... I can't.

In photography class, we use the cameras that are provided which work for still life. However they lack the ability to take photos of student sporting events, pep rallies or plays. I am trying to help personalize my student's high school experiences and help them make connections and relationships in order to become more engaged in school. Most of my students come from a low income family household and their families do not have the ability to capture their child in school activities due to lack of equipment. My students have shared with me that the art class is a place for them to escape the challenges of their world and to just feel like a kid.

My Project

Even my disengaged students get excited when they are able to work with new technology.

They all want to learn how to take a great photo; after all they live in a digital image world.

Often we find students at our school disengaged, they see little value in relationships with their peers, teachers and especially their school community. Basically "they don't see the point" of engaging in their environment. With this camera I will help students engage by using it to create a visual wall of student biographies and autobiographies. their stories will celebrate whom they are and will tell their stories and aid in building per and students teacher relationships. This wall of stories will celebrate the cultural differences found among us but also help us find connections to each other that we may otherwise not have seen. The use of this camera will allow students to gain the technical skills, as well as, the artist skills needed to compose a great photograph. As they progress, they will be able to do team photo-shoots and independent work to build artisanship and to be able to practice socialization. The camera set will play many roles in the program for the students. It will give all students a chance to use advanced technology in class without technical limitations. Their successes will enhance the classroom but also art displays as well. I have seen how student choice can positively affect my students work and engagement.
