Our high school was founded in 1957 as a school for the gifted children of New Orleans. The founders had a vision. Inspired by the launch of Sputnik and the space race, an American educational revolution was just beginning. Our school opened ahead of the National Defense Education Act that would put new focus on science and mathematics.
We serve a population of students with high intellectual potential from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds (61% minority).
A vast majority of our students will choose scientific careers. We serve 200 ninth graders and 200 tenth graders as well as 200 eleventh and 12th graders in AP science classes each year: Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, and Earth Science.
However, our young people also enjoy extra curricular activities, such as music. People breathe music in the Delta of the Mississippi River. Our orchestra and bands are strong 170 young musicians and they excel at playing. Photography class is a new hit.
My Project
Have you ever share 6 cameras with 49 of your peers in your photography class? Well, it's not easy and you don't get to hold one too often.
The goal for the photography class is for students to master basic camera skills on professional grade DSLR cameras.
Donors, you can help my students get more practice with supporting this project. One more camera will make a huge difference.
Photography provides students with the unique opportunity to create original work that can be broadly published with the school and local community. Messages about diversity and social acceptance/inclusion for all kids can be incorporated into these projects. We have an incredibly diverse student body with various abilities. Working with cameras is fun and accessible.
The class is very important because while some students may be intimidated by more other art skills like drawing and painting, camera work is easily learned and implemented with high quality results. Students have an immediate sense of success with their projects.
