Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach second grade at P.S. 26 in Bedford Stuyvesant. I teach in a low income community in a school that faces plenty of challenges, but our teachers and staff work tirelessly to give our students the type of education that they deserve. Just a few days ago I was teaching a writing lesson and decided to share some photographs to supplement the lesson. Some students just gasped in amazement. "Wow... look at those pictures. Those are mad hot! I wish I had a camera so I could take pictures like those." As comments similar to these continued to sneak out of their mouths, a brilliant idea came to mind. I could start an after school photography club! Not only would this keep students engaged in a creative and exciting form of art, but it would keep students out of trouble and safe for at least an extra hour and a half. I am looking to purchase 15 35mm cameras and 45 rolls of film to get us started. Fifteen students from grades 2-5 will be joining the photography club, which will begin the second Tuesday in December (05). We are all so excited to get started, we just need the supplies!!
