Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need somewhere to learn what success feels like. 100% of our students are at our school because they struggled to succeed in traditional class settings. Almost all of our kids come from broken families and economically disadvantaged backgrounds as well.
We focus on using positive messages, high expectations and restorative practices to help the students progress from wherever they are academically and succeed.
At our school, we are changing how education is done. Many of our kids will go on to post-secondary school, but only with the proper support.
My Project
We are an alternative high school, and want to add more hands-on, project-based learning experiences for our kids. Additionally, many of our students want creative outlets. Since many of our students come from a background of trauma, being able to express themselves can be therapeutic.
Photography will give our students the ability to be creative while learning a marketable skill.
We have two cameras already, but with our program expanding and many kids interested in photography, we need more to be able to reach more students. One of the projects we plan to do is offer a hands-on Digital Imaging course that they can complete as a fine art or elective credit. I have a long history of photography, and am excited to share this with the kids. They will learn about exposures, image manipulation, posing, composition and more. It is my hope that they will not only learn how to make art for themselves, but to maybe have a marketable skill to boot.
