Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I know that every teacher says they have special kids and that their kids are full of potential. And, I have no doubt that is true, but these kids really are so optimistic about their lives and futures, despite their often less than ideal situations. They want to work, and they work hard.
These kids see things through a different lens.
They have been in low places, seen things they shouldn't, and felt hurt and happiness in a totally different way than most other teens. They work because they have to, and they work hard because they want to be great. The potential in these kids is unprecedented because they truly want it. They all come in with a huge desire to be successful and they will work for it 1000 times harder than anyone else, with smiles on their faces.
My Project
Just as important as writing and being clear about intended audience, interviews, and reporting real news, are the images and personal stories that they tell. I am teaching my students to tell the stories without words.
To be prepared in any circumstance- drop what they are doing, and take an incredible image that could contribute to history.
To begin this unit, we did photo-analyses of 9/11 and talked about how this impacted history as they know it to be. We discussed how the images didn't need captions or lines to tell the story because we can clearly depict the story from the image. Though I hope to never see a student's photojournalistic work after a horrible tragedy, I hope to give them the knowledge to contribute to the world in such a beautiful and effortless way.
By giving them the resources to take images in any circumstance- a reflector for light, a ring light for studio shots, and SD cards for their cameras will ensure they are ready. The printer is to give them motivation to keep going- printing their best work and giving the school opportunities to tell stories through the use of student images.
