This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My Detroit, MI students are brilliant, Special Needs young adults. They are longing for art programs, as that is not a part of the curriculum. Marking art, taking photographs, brings a sense of self confidence and social worth. It also spreads a calm and positive energy throughout the classroom.
Urgent, my Detroit, MI Special Needs students need cameras and instant film, starting JAN 22, 2019!
Curious, enthusiastic budding photojournalists, my Special Needs students are fearless, willing, brave and starving to release their creativity.
My artist residency takes place in a School educating Special Needs teens and young adults. In my initial visit, I saw joys and excitement shown by the students when told about the projects.
Underserved but very deserving, our photography and multi-media work will be presented in a show and share including the parents, caretakers, faculty and other participating artists.
Thanking you all in advance, Ms. Kay's students.
My Project
The project is an 8 week artist residency with supplies needed throughout the project starting Jan 22, 2019. The Kodak cameras will snap student portraits and photojournalism throughout the campus and create a show and share for their parents, faculty, student body and other artists in residence. The self portraits will be printed on fabric adhesive to be ironed on a community quilt for the school hallway. The hand puppets will be created for a puppet show, including a hand made stage.
My special needs students don't have art in their curriculum and have never had a photojournalism or puppet class - this be rewarding and self reflecting experience for them.
Math and science will be a part of the lesson referencing the camera mechanics. Instant cameras create self reflecting scrapbooks. Magnifiers to distort and enhance the objects. The multi-media supplies are for puppets in a puppet show and a quilt to be displayed in the school with their portraits ironed on the quilt.
