Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I high school in a priority district. All of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My classroom is a mixed grade-level, as well as a mixed academic-level classroom.

Therefore, my class includes English Language Learners, special education students, a large range of academic abilities, and many students who come from a struggling economic environment. These struggles have led to an increase in failing classes and students not attending school. And often when these students do attend, they are extremely disengaged.

Our students, like all students, deserve learning opportunities and access to information to help them become successful, contributing members of society. Our students are full of passion, energy, and excitement. They take pride in their successes, especially when overcoming obstacles. They are always very excited to try new technology, but they have extremely limited means to do so since most live around the poverty line. I take pride and joy in the challenge of finding ways to meet their personal needs to help them achieve.

My Project

With these filters and soft-boxes, I will be able to set up classroom displays to be photographed with items that are composed of 100% clear plastic. We will then explore the scientific world of Photoelasticity. The area of Photoelasticity that we will study will be light reflections against a backlight backdrop that holds light traveling in only one direction. Students will be able to see the light spectrum of the rainbow appear in ordinary items. Students will then pick items that create an aesthetically pleasing composition for their student portfolio work.
