Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For the past six years I have worked at an elementary school in East Harlem, New York City. The resources for students and teachers are extremely limited, which makes teaching sometimes very difficult.
A major problem at our school is the fact that the photocopy machine rarely functions. It is also not accessible to teachers, so there is one aide who attempts to make thousands of copies a day, when the machine is in working order. What this really means is that photocopies are simply not available.
Now, some might argue that photocopies are unnecessary, and that journals and workbooks would be more than efficient in the classroom. However, in a school where many parents can't afford to buy books, supplies (including basic loose leaf paper) are rarely available, and workbooks are not to be written in (so that they can be reused each year), things can get a little difficult. This is obviously very stressful to many of us.
I am currently a lower grade science teacher and would love more than anything to help our school purchase a copy machine that would be accesible to teachers on a daily basis. We would take responsibility for buying paper, ink cartridges, and servicing the machine. However it is impossible to ask everyone to pitch in to buy a machine on our own, considering many of us are struggling to live and raise own families.
There are so many hardworking and dedicated students and teachers at our school. You could help make teaching our deserving pupils a far more successful enterprise. Thank you so much.
