Mrs. Carter from East Orange NJ is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a digital camera, wireless printer with photo paper and photo journal books.

My ninth grade students are special because they are unique and extremely talented. I currently teach at a performing and fine arts school where students are required to participate in an audition process and be accepted into the school. Many of my students are first generation American students and come from backgrounds that range. About 95% of the students I teach receive free and reduced lunch. Although many of them live in poverty and lack the resources needed to be academically successful they strive to balance core courses and electives.
My students are special because they are motivated to beat the odds.
Many of the students live in single parent homes where parents spend a majority of their time at work in order to provide for their children. Students do not always have the support at home to receive help with homework and to build on concepts learned in school. Parents have expressed difficulty in helping with homework because they themselves lack the skills. As an educator, I am dedicated to helping my students beat the odds by creating a platform where parents and teachers can connect in order to challenge our students to be all that they can.
I am requesting the materials, such as a digital camera, a printer, and photo journal books, to create a photo journal nook for the creative writers that I teach. My scholars would use the materials to choose topics, capture pictures about the topic, and to write stories and poems, as well as document their lives using the images. Many of the scholars have expressed their love for photography and though our school offers other opportunities related to the arts, there is not a creative outlet for them to bridge photography and writing.
The donations to this project will remind my scholars that a picture is truly worth a thousand words and they can tell their story through photos.
The resources will help my students to connect to the curriculum in many ways. For example, one project that the materials will be used for is to create a campaign based on a social issue of their choice. The scholars will have to find creative ways to document the campaign through photography. Another project, is to have the students each submit a photo of themselves in black and white. They will write a memoir using the photo to tell their narrative. We will use the photo journal books as a guide to teaching photography and writing.
The photo journal nook will create a safe place for the scholars to be creative and find additional ways to speak out through photography.
