My 100+ high school science students inspire me every day. They come from a low income, rural Texas community. They face many challenges before they make it to school every morning. They come to school even though they may have worked the night shift at a local fast food restaurant, the nursing home or had to take care of younger siblings so a parent could work. I see them at their worst and at their best. I see their triumphs and tragedies. They are my heart.
A Pirates' pride is the determination to succeed against all odds.
I use our school mascot to speak success to my students . They see loss and failure in their community on a daily basis. When they come to my class they are the epitome of success. As a teacher, I will have nothing less for them.
Our school motto is P.R.I.D.E (Personal Responsibility in Developing Excellence) We are a small school of approximately 550 students. We take great pride in our students' academic success. Our goal is to provide the best education possible with the tools that we have available for our
My Project
The old saying is that a picture is worth a thousand words. I believe that my students will benefit from having these tools available during lab time. The cameras, printer and computer will be dedicated for lab only use for the students to photograph lab procedures. They will download and print their evidence and create a photographic record to add to their lab reports for their science journal. They will not only have written evidence to refer to, they will also have photographic evidence of the procedures and outcome of the lab. This is an area where the many of my students struggle. Many times the lower class men will have difficulty connecting experimentation with what they are learning. I believe this is a problem with critical thinking skill. Since each lab is meant to build on lab skills and to provide evidence of the subject being taught, these lab resources will advance my students toward a deeper understanding of lab procedure, experimentation and objective recall because my students will be able to refer to the photographs as a scaffolding tool for the next experiment and for further study.
Up to date technology is critical to low income students for a deeper dimension of learning and academic success in an ever changing world.
Another great benefit of having these tools available is to advance my students toward college readiness. These materials will enhance the learning experience and save precious class time for more meaningful learning.
