Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

The most obvious distinguishing factors about my school is that it' a single gender public school for young men, we serve 425 students in grades 6-12. Over 98% are eligible for free or reduced lunch, we are a Title 1, and lastly, the fact that it is a school in a low economic urban setting only amplifies the importance of what happens inside the school walls. So it is our responsibility to provide access to these tools at school. We want to keep these young men enthusiasm for learning blooming and encourage their motivation to obtain knowledge. We can only accomplish this goal by making available broadcast resources that will spark their interest and still be an extension of classroom instruction.

My Project

My students need a camera. Students will practice taking many different types of digital photos and learn to edit them to create eye catching effects. Students will contribute to the yearbook club by providing memorable photographs from all school events. Students will also contribute photographs to the school's newsletter and they will build the culture of the school through photos.

This project is of importance because photography is hands-on, and hands-on is a single-gender strategies for working with young men.

My goal with these young men is to immerse them in an interactive club that focuses on the artistic, technical and fun side of taking pictures. Students will learn the ins and outs (ups and downs) of photography while looking at an array of photos, and they will practice with cameras in class and during outdoor exploratory trips.
