A fire destroyed my phonemic awareness listening center...HELP!
In February a fire was set in my room by an arsonist and destroyed the the listening center (headphones and cassette/CD player) and the Phonemic Awareness Listening Kit.
I am a Title I teacher and teach reading for grades 1,2,3,4,5,and 6. I teach in an urban school district in Indiana where 97% of our students are underprivileged.
I recently found out that the equipment, supplies or furniture in my room would not be replaced due to the large insurance deductible the school system carries.
It is very important for the success of reading that our students at an early age become skilled in phonemic awareness (being able to recognize and produce sounds either isolated or in a word). Unfortunately, their home environment provides little experience in this area. Having books and having parents read to them is a luxury to our students. This is the reason why so many students in our area are behind in reading.
Your donation will make a difference in our students. The practice that they will receive through the Listen and Learn Phonemic Awareness Activity Program will make them successful readers. I have seen the improvement in reading this program can make since I had it before the fire. The students thoroughly enjoy using it, since it is a different approach to phonemic awareness. The listening center will not only be used with the Phonemic Awareness Program but will also allow all my students to listen to books on tape throughout the year. Frequent and good modeling is necessary in becoming a successful reader, this is what the Califone Listening Center will provide.
