Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am so fortunate to teach an amazing group of differently-abled kids. My students are 5th - 6th graders who we are preparing for the big transition to intermediate school. We work on everything from reading and math to social skills to physical education and even personal hygiene and life skills. In my classroom, we teach it all.
Every day, my students work to overcome obstacles that would defeat the average person.
They want to be just like their general education peers and work every day on similar projects and assignments tailored for their learning levels. I am proud to be their teacher on a daily basis.
My Project
I am requesting an iPod Touch and case to go with it to start teaching my students how to use a smart phone as a tool and not just a toy. While most of my students know how to operate a smart phone or tablet, they only know how to use it to play the game they like or watch the video they want to watch. I want my students to be able to use a smart phone for the most basic of purposes, using a phone.
Most of my students don't know how to dial a number, find someone in their contacts or use a maps app to help them get around.
It is my hope that by providing an iPod Touch that we can simulate what it would be like to have your own phone, I can build lessons around useful apps that can help my students navigate the world around them.
