My elementary school is in the heart of South Florida. My students are an amazing group of children who love to please their teachers. I think that they are the sweetest group of children. My school has a large immigrant population with many of our students that are learning English as a second language. Our school is made up of multi-ethnic families who honor education but often struggle to help their children with reading and homework due to many other languages are spoken at home.
The phonics workbooks will allow my students to practice the skills that they are being taught within the classroom to set them up for success when beginning to read, as well as beginning to learn English. These workbooks provide the scope and sequence of phonics instruction that supplements the phonics instruction that the students receive from direct instruction during the school day. However, the missing piece is the ability to practice these skills independently, which are not provided by the district.
My goal is to create proficient readers by the end of second grade to send them to third grade fully prepared to comprehend a variety of texts without struggling with decoding of words when reading.
