Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a Title I charter in San Francisco. Mostly made up of English Language Learners, our room is constantly working on the acquisition of new vocabulary and better understanding of multiple languages through literature.
My literacy room is full of hilarious, genuine, and vocal minds who exhibit a natural curiosity for the ever-evolving world around them.
A typical day looks chaotic and sounds rowdy. We are an active bunch that loves to learn through discussion, movement, projects and of course reading. All in all, there is simply nothing typical about my inquisitive learners.
My Project
In order for my kids to achieve reading success and comprehend what they are reading, they must be able to do it automatically, without stumbling over words. Phonics facilitates that process. With lots of practice sounding out words, in combination with other important reading skills such as phonemic awareness, letter recognition, vocabulary building, and concepts of print, they learn to read more fluently. My students need phonics activities so that they can learn while having fun!
By working hard to build their phonics skills my students will develop an understanding of letters and sounds as well as an excellent sight word vocabulary.
This will set them up to become better readers and start them on the path for a lifetime love of learning! You will not only be helping my students this year but for all the years and readers to come.
