Mrs. Simpkins from Nashville TN is requesting educational kits & games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students these materials that will help drive their reading and writing success this school year. These materials will help during small group learning time to continue the momentum of learning autonomously.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
In the heart of East Nashville, my first graders bring a sense of imagination, a willingness to learn and an overall joy to the classroom. It is my job, as their teacher to teach them to read, write, and build their social-emotional selves that in turn, build the beginning building blocks of their education. The scholars here come from various diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free lunch and often have trouble providing educational tools and books at home. Often, due to backgrounds and their availability to resources, my scholars come into our classroom significantly behind their peers. It is my role, as their teacher to provide them with a rich learning environment full of materials to help enrich their experiences on a daily basis.
With your help, these materials will help drive and enforce their learning to become greater readers. Studies show that direct phonics instruction has helped struggling readers become better autonomous readers that are confident and successful. The games, interactive journals and etc. will assist in keeping the momentum of learning on a high level even when a teacher is not directly instructing them during independent centers.
Daily, scholars are given a large chunk of time to be immersed in a language arts rich environment.
One rotation is used for guided reading and reading comprehension. Another rotation is used for scholars to gain their autonomy and learn at their own pace with materials such as these file folder games, listening centers, and independent reading. The last rotation is used for phonics. These materials will help my students keep up the skills learned at my table (word families, beginning blends, ending blends, letter chunks) and apply them independently.
