You are in first grade, and need to keep busy while your teacher is teaching reading groups. You know you need to practice many skills to become an even better reader, but you are bored with doing the same activity every day. If only your class had a variety of "working with words" activities!
My school is located in the suburbs of Minneapolis.
We are a magnet school for children's engineering. About 65% of our students come from poverty and over 20 different languages are spoken in the school. We also have high mobility, meaning children move in and out of our school quite frequently. This often leaves large gaps in learning. My classroom is a rainbow of diversity in terms of culture, race, and ability. My students are very active. I refer to many of them as, "bodies in motion." They are a young group, many with summer birthdays. They love to read and write, and we are all developing a love for problem solving.
My Project
Recently, each of my students has had a goal setting meeting with me. Together we talked about their strengths and needs in reading and math. Then I helped them write a reading goal. For many students, this goal includes working on phonics skills such as identifying rhyming words or isolating middle and end sounds. These phonics skills are essential for success in reading and writing.
Students have the opportunity to do "word work" each day as part of their independent structures while I am doing guided reading groups. This kit will allow students to work independently while I am teaching reading groups because they have visual directions that even non-readers can understand.
This kit of ready-to-use phonics activities will provide a variety of options for students to choose from when working towards achieving their goals.
It will allow me to differentiate the activities to meet each of their individual needs.
