Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 24 energetic 2nd grade students in inner Los Angeles. My students come to school with many questions about the world. They are inquisitive, creative, and full of energy. They enjoy listening to stories and working on collaborative hands-on projects.
Most students started 2nd grade working far below grade level.
Although some face many challenges in their lives, they are compassionate, silly, and optimistic. With this in mind, I strive to create a classroom environment where each student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
My Project
Most of my students entered 2nd grade reading below grade level! The phonics program my district provided focuses on phonics skills in isolation and is not engaging. My students are not engaged and are not transferring the skills to their writing.
I teach reading and writing using the workshop model and want a phonics curriculum that aligns with my philosophy of teaching.
The Phonics Units of Study were created by Lucy Calkins, a leading expert in reading and writing instruction, and her colleagues at Columbia's Teachers College. The units are research based and have been taught in classrooms across the country.
I want to provide my students with phonics instruction that is engaging, hands-on, and aligned with my reading and writing instruction.
