Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am in my tenth year of teaching in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I have a diverse group of learners with abilities as low as kindergarten all the way up to fourth grade (above grade level). Regardless of their abilities, I have discovered that my students are eager learners that are highly motivated and want to do better each and every day.
As a third grade teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, I work with students who are faced with many challenges.
What I have learned in my career is that children are resilient and can/will persevere when faced with such challenges. This new group is no different! They are dedicated learners who are always striving to do their best.
Many of my students are coming to school each day without their basic needs being met. I have had students this year worry about where they would be staying at night or where their next meal is coming from. Although I may not have control over what my students are facing in their home lives, I do have control over our classroom environment! I strive to make our room a safe, warm and loving environment where everyone is a contributing member.
My Project
Currently, I have 26 students in my classroom with reading abilities from kindergarten all the way up to fifth grade. I feel that I have ample materials for my students at grade level and above, but I am struggling to find materials to teach my K-2 and have them work independently.
The goal of phonics instruction is to teach students the most common sound-spelling relationships so that they can decode, or sound out, words.
A student's decoding ability is a crucial element in reading success. Although all students are expected to be on grade level by third grade, years of classroom experience has taught me that expectations and reality don't always match up. The reading curriculum that I have in my classroom is for students in third grade who are learning at grade level. In order to meet the needs of ALL students in my classroom, I need materials to teach basic phonics to my K-2 students. Phonics involves the relationship between sounds and their spellings. It is the foundation of reading and writing. If students are unable to identify letter sounds (ie. digraphs, letter blends, vowel combinations) then they will struggle with reading and writing throughout their academic career and beyond. Students need a solid foundation and understanding of phonics in order to become a successful reader and writer. With the materials requested, students will be able to work in small groups, pairs or even individually to master letter sounds and letter-sound combinations. The Phonics Instant Learning Centers includes multiple centers with varying levels of difficulty. Once the students master one level, they can graduate to the next! Students will be learning letter sounds and practicing their phonological skills in a fun and engaging manner. Leveled sight word practice cards allow the ability to practice writing sight words.
I also need black write-and-wipe markers for each student.
