Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it." -Marian Wright Edelman
Our school, although high performing, is part of a Title I district where a majority of students are under-performing.
Since the students at our individual school perform well on state tests, we are not given extra or additional funds for supplies that are provided to our neighboring schools. Our school is K-8 and services a variety of diverse learners. I work with four different grade levels of students, both boys and girls, who struggle or need some extra support in reading. Therefore, I must ask for your help!
My Project
The U. S. Department of Education states that "systematic and explicit phonics instruction is more effective than non-systematic or no phonics instruction." Much of the difficulty faced by my struggling readers is the need of a strong phonics foundation.
Effective phonics instruction provides the steps necessary for children to break apart words into sounds when speaking, and then demonstrates how we blend those sounds to form words.
I need a Phonics Skills Activity center and Listen and Learn phonics activity program for my small group instruction. They will benefit my students by helping them understand the relationship between sounds and letters will improve their recognition of words overall, thereby increasing their ability to know how to spell words, and eventually to how to put it all together to read and comprehend text. The children will learn to write two-syllable words, identify missing sounds in words, and manipulate letter tiles while working at their own pace. These materials will help to reinforce my instruction as the students listen to a C.D. while working with blends and digraphs and long and short vowels, reviewing the lesson of the day.
Your help and contributions are needed to make this happen. You are a pivotal part of improving my students reading skills. Thank you for considering our class when donating today!
