As the music teacher of the only non-audition based music school in New York City, I strive to give my students every opportunity. Our school was opened less than 15 years ago with the mission to give all students, regardless of their prior knowledge, an opportunity to learn and grow in the arts.
Over 95% of the students are of black or Hispanic heritage, and over 85% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.
Although many of our students' math and reading skills fall below grade level, they are intelligent, passionate, and all performers at heart.
Throughout the year it is important to me to expose students to a variety of musical styles. We perform music from many different genres and decades. Currently, our chorus is very excited to be learning Walking on Sunshine, while our guitar class is learning some pop punk music. As a classically trained musician, I find it vital that our students are exposed to classical music, and the world that surrounds it.
This trip will bring students to Lincoln Center to see Shubert's Great Symphony performed at Avery Fischer Hall.
I'll never forget the excitement of the first time I sat in those box seats, so high up I could see all of the instruments playing, and the percussionists running back and forth between their gear. This is an experience all kids deserve. The trip will be open to all students, regardless of whether or not they are currently enrolled in music, and provide an opportunity they may not otherwise have.
