Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students arrive at school daily to immerse themselves in an inspiring, safe, and consistent learning community. With low-income backgrounds, 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. With fascinating backgrounds and households of wonderfully diverse constitutions, our students work hard every day in an environment of vigorous curriculum and learning standards.
Reading allows our students to travel around the world, be exposed to new ideas and concepts, meet new heroes, and build empathy, understanding, and compassion for others.
Many of our students struggle with reading, are reluctant readers, and are thirsting for inspiring stories to engage them and build their comprehension. Texts that push their thinking help them fully realize the diversity of the beautiful world we live in and further build their understanding of how they can both fit in and stand out.
My Project
Poetry is a fun medium in which my students get to explore emotions, humor, and topics they find inspiring and interesting in engaging ways. By writing poems about school, home, their favorite sports team, Minecraft, and often deep concerns such as the environment, caring for each other, kindness, and bullying, students can process their thinking and emotions, sharing sides of themselves they have not previously shared. Exploring figurative language, different types of poems, the theme, characters, setting, mood, and tone of poems is important for my scholars. A well-rounded poetry section in our classroom library will allow for year-round exploration, with poems inspiring students to express themselves in new ways.
