Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are all from three to five years old. Our classroom is typically their first school experience. The students in our classroom qualify under the education eligibility criteria for autism, with mild to moderate impairments in areas of social skills, language development, and sensory regulation and integration. Our students come from all cultural backgrounds and beliefs. We strive to make our classroom the best learning environment and experience we can for their first school experience.
Our class consists of eight amazing boys and two wonderful girls who all have an IEP (Individual Education Plan) qualifying under the educational eligibility of autism.
Each student has amazing skills and talents. Each student's IEP is created to build from their strengths and support their unique needs. The majority of our students' goals are created to support delays in the areas of social skills, play skills, academics, fine/gross motor, and coping skills.
My Project
Our students LOVE Pete The Cat. The books and videos have such catchy tunes and phrases, it makes it motivating for our students to read and engage within the story. We have requested many different books with different themes. Pete The Cat And The Lost Tooth, to help our students learn that its okay to lose a tooth, everyone loses teeth, even Pete! We've requested Pete The Cat At The Beach to incorporate into our beach thematic unit.
It is critical to help young children be ready for school by working with them to develop early literacy and learning skills.
We have specifically chosen these books to help with early literacy, social skills, attention, social exchange, cause and effect, and being able to request. We are hoping by bringing these motivating preferred books to our library , it will not only encourage our student to choose books independently, but also enrich their early literacy skills.
