Our school offers a learning environment that is caring and safe and strives to educate the whole child while promoting good character, responsibility, and academic success for every student. We have about 600 students at our school and about 85% of those students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch. Our school has a very diverse population with about 30% of our students being English Language Learners and more than five different languages spoken by our students.
This school year I am teaching fourth grade English Language Arts and I will have around 95 students throughout the day.
I am so excited to meet all of my students and get to know them in order to provide them with the skills they need to be successful. I believe in building relationships with each individual child in order to really get to know them as learners. This allows me to personalize the learning experience in order to find success in all students.
My Project
At the center of personalized learning is the individual child.
We know each child comes into our classrooms with different experiences and different ways of connecting with the world around them.
What if we allowed more student choice in the way they learned? That is the goal in my classroom this year. I am going to start with the choice of flexible seating.
The flexible seating option allows students to find comfortable positions throughout the classroom in order to produce their best work! It helps them to be calm and focused as well as productive! I also believe that flexible seating helps to create a greater classroom community by encouraging students to take pride in our space and supplies. My students will use the seat cushions and the carpets to give them some support when they choose to work on the floor around the classroom. The ottomans will be used as seats as well as storage and the lap desk trays will be perfect for student work stations!
