Personal Popsicle Transport Device

My Project

All of my students are 6th graders who will be studying thermal energy transfer. They will be doing a culminating project where they apply the principles of thermal energy to design, construct, and test a device that minimizes thermal energy transfer. They will work in groups to make a "Personal Popsicle Transport Device" for a fictional company that transports popsicles. They will use paper to brainstorm ideas, diagram, and explain ideas on how to make the device. They are given bubble wrap, foil, plastic wrap, tape, paper, styrofoam, and glue to build their device. These materials can minimize thermal energy transfer and the students will come up with the best way to use them together to make the most effective device.

With the donation of these supplies, students will demonstrate knowledge across the curriculum as they will not only be using science but math, English, and reading as well.

Once they have created their device, they will test it by adding a popsicle to it and setting it under a heat lamp. They will be weighing their popsicle before and after the heat is applied so they can see how effectively constructed their insulator device was. Besides using all of their science knowledge the students are working in groups and collaborating. This project is an outstanding way for the students to demonstrate their knowledge in a real-world application of thermal energy transfer concepts.
