I teach a group of twenty-six first grade students in one of the cities with the highest crime rate in the nation. All the students at my school site receive free lunch. A full 97% of my school's student population is Hispanic, and most of them are first-generation in the United States. At least 15% of my students are newcomers to the country. School is one of the only places at which my students interact with someone who speaks academic English.
Living and attending school in a highly impoverished, urban setting, my students are not exposed to many educational experiences outside of the classroom.
Exposing my students to different types of learning while keeping them engaged and entertained is very important to me.
This project has to do with having students feel clean and prepared to tackle the school year. All the items that I am requesting funding for have to do with personal cleanliness.
Although, the items that I feel are most needed are body soap and lotion, my students can also use toothpaste, hair and tooth brushes, hair ties and lip protectant.
I'm asking for the items that I feel my students really used this school year and I want those items to be ready for my students in the coming year. I already have in mind who will be getting some of the items.
Please help my students attend school looking and feeling like their personal hygiene is not something with which they need to be concerned.
