My students need to read a wider variety of nonfiction. The type of reading they will most likely experience in post secondary education as well as in the workforce.
My students are 12th grade students who are about to embark on their own unique journeys -- some are continuing their education in the college classroom while others will go straight to the workforce or military to further themselves.
Our students work hard and are always ready to try new things -- RISE, Mindfulness, if we come up with it, they rise to the challenge every time.
There is not a harder group of students in the district; I can promise you that.
Despite their hard work, many students struggle to provide their own unique Independent Reading novels because of financial struggles at home; in fact, 100% of our students receive free lunch.
My Project
Students will use these non fiction texts to support Passion Projects they will work on later in the year. While students will read independently, they will share their readings and understanding in small groups, class discussions, and technology based presentations. The novels will help spark their own ideas for how to make the world a better place and how to make themselves better in return.
Students will be exposed to a variety of self growth and self help novels that will help them in specific areas of personal growth: anxiety, mindfulness, leadership, responsibility, etc.
These readings will help them to grow as an individual and to experience reading that they will be more familiar with in their post secondary education and their careers.
