This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

I teach in a small, urban public school serving students from Cleveland, East Cleveland, and Euclid, Ohio. This is my first year as an intervention specialist, serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade who need additional supports to be successful in school. All of my students have been identified as having a specific learning disability in math and/or reading, an intellectual disability, autism, other health impairment, or are deaf. This makes learning in the general education classroom more challenging. However, all of my students are very sweet, love to have fun, enjoy being active, and are generous and kind. Unfortunately, many of my students have experienced trauma or other emotional distress in their young lives. My goal is to ensure that they feel safe and supported at school and that they have a chance to reach their full potential no matter what obstacles they may face.

Studies, as far back as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory, continually confirm that students cannot perform to the best of their abilities if their basic needs are not being met.

The requested health and hygiene products will help us meet our students basic needs so that they feel comfortable in the classroom. This will help improve attendance and allow students to focus more on learning.

Many of our female middle schoolers rely on their teachers to supply them with feminine hygiene products. Having to ask a teacher for these items can often be uncomfortable or even embarrassing. I would love to have a special cart available for students to easily and discreetly access supplies whenever they are needed.
