Our school has a diverse population of students. This school is a Title 1 school where all of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school also receives school-wide Title 1 funding. Many students come from low-income families or nontraditional homes. Students at my school are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative.
My students cherish their opportunities for learning because they want to become successful one day.
I believe it is my job to not only teach the students the curriculum but also to teach them to love learning. In my classroom, I encourage students to develop social skills, build a community, and engage in their learning. I know that what my students learn now will impact them for a lifetime.
My Project
Our school uses a Positive Behavior Intervention Support model to eliminate negative behaviors in the classroom. Instead of targeting negative behaviors, we target positive behaviors and reward students for these good behaviors with school tickets. Students earn tickets throughout the week and then are able to spend those tickets at the school store each Friday. This strategy works well for students, as they are able to see their good behaviors paying off.
Implementing this system within the school reduced write-ups and office referrals by over 60%!
This is an amazing success for our kiddos, and we are only looking up from here. The students are placed in a house when they enter Kindergarten (think Harry Potter). Each house has a color, name, meaning, and soon becomes a second family for kids. I am asking for materials that allow for students to express their house spirit, allow for them to 'purchase' a new toy, or give them a good snack to eat while shopping at the school store each Friday.
It is amazing to see how much more our students can learn when they are in the classroom and behaving well for themselves and those around them!
