Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of the classes I work with has a new enthusiastic teacher who had a new MacMini donated to her room. We have to borrow a mouse, keyboard and monitor from another room every time we want to use it since it didn't come with these things. We need our own so we don't waste time setting up everyday.
I am a technology push in teacher in a Middle School in a very depressed area of New York City.
My students are from diverse backgrounds, but share many characteristics. They all qualify for free lunch and many are English Language Learners. My students have access to the computer lab twice a week, but the curriculum there is structured and allows little time for them to work on their own projects. The classroom computers give them a lifeline to the world outside of their classroom, school and neighborhood.
My Project
My students use the classroom computers for so many activities. They use them for research, word processing, preparing presentations and multimedia projects. The computers motivate my students to finish their work, to go beyond the minimum requirements and to explore resources they do not otherwise have access to. They also encourage cooperation among the students because they need to be shared equitably. No one wastes their computer time because they value it so much. We have two Mac Mini computers, one which the school provided and one which was donated. The donated one didn't come with a mouse, keyboard or monitor, so we borrow them from another classroom. Because I am the technology push in teacher, I make sure we have all the equipment we need while I am in the classroom, but we really need to have our own so both computers can be used all the time. Much time is wasted everyday setting up and connecting all the borrowed equipment.
Times are hard, we are all experiencing the financial crunch, schools most of all.
There is no money left this year to purchase these things ourselves. Next year's budget cuts look deep as well. It is hard to ask for donations when we know that money is so limited. The donation of these peripherals will impact this class tremendously. If you can find a way to help our class, we would be so appreciative.
