Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fifth grade class is a wonderful bunch of English Language Learners with widespread interests and talents. They have overcome many obstacles growing up in a low-income/high-need urban community. Many of them are trying to learn English, even as they are trying to master tough academic concepts and skills.
They continue to surprise and inspire me with their resilience and hard work every day.
My students are genuinely excited to learn and still love coming to school every day. I want to nurture that curiosity, and help them discover their full potential.
My Project
My kids love science, probably more than any subject. The mysteries of the animal kingdom and space can captivate them like no other. As 5th graders, they are also beginning to be curious about what is happening in the world around them.
The periodicals SuperScience and Scholastic News will create the kind of current event "buzz" that leads to lively discussions and helps students connect their learning to what is happening in the world.
These periodicals will also give my students the opportunity to read fresh stories while practicing important non-fiction reading skills. This is the type of reading that will make them lifelong consumers of news.
