Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am at a Title 1 school in a low income community. 98% of our children are on free and reduced lunch. We have a high percentage, around 75%, of Hispanic children mostly from immigrant parents looking to give their children a better life. These children face many challenges such as: language barriers, broken homes due to deportations, many families live together in one house or apartment, single moms because the husbands have to work out of state. Even though our community faces many challenges, they are a very resilient and loving community.
One of the greatest joys is to see our kids work hard and the parents doing the best they can to support their children so they can have better opportunities, than the ones they had.
We work very hard to meet not only the academic needs but also the social-emotional needs of our children. They need a lot of help and we have limited resources.
My Project
The arts are a great way for children to express themselves. Dance is a great form of expression and a wonderful way to gain discipline. Theater gives student the opportunity to learn about public speaking, responsibility, team building and teamwork. Through Fine Arts children have an outlet to release their stress. This program is a great way for our students to experience all forms of Arts. Not only performing themselves, but also the opportunity to be exposed to the Arts in general. Having a a community that is well rounded academically and culturally makes for adults that are more opened minded, creative and hardworking.
