This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Hello! I am lucky to be a 3rd grade teacher at a school in Urbana, IL. I, personally, have 17 wonderful students in my classroom from five different countries. I have the kids from across the street here in the United States as well as students from Guatemala, Indonesia, The Congo, and Brazil. Between us, we speak six different languages at different levels of proficiency, but all classrooms are similar to ours in diversity, so the students are used to helping one another to get accustomed to their new environments quickly. We also have a lot of students move in and out of school. While some children come to us temporarily as their parents study, other students are the children of refugees from areas of conflict and will, luckily, be with us for the foreseeable future!
While I only have 17 students assigned to my room, I share co-teaching responsibilities with two other third grade classrooms with 17 kids each, 51 kids in all, and an ESL teacher and several native language teachers.
Our students are truly EVERYONE'S kids! It can get a little busy, but we love it and wouldn't trade it for the world!
My Project
While my students were given one-to-one technology this year, we are struggling to find the funding for basic supplies. With a copy allotment cut by 80% this year, I am paying out of pocket for even basic printing of worksheets to give my students for homework and stressing over the scramble to find ways to engage them and their families in learning without having the basic means to communicate.
In a school where technology is not guaranteed outside our doors, pencil and paper are still required.
Students still like to see their work printed and made into books. They still like to create foldables, lapbooks, and dioramas, and (believe it or not) they still like to color sometimes, too! Printing is a basic necessity, and without it, our class has been struggling to feel prepared this year. We need a printer, extra ink and color card stock.
