Have you ever worked really hard to become better at something? My students do this all the time. They are working every day to meet the basic standards and to exceed them!
I work in the inner-city of Indianapolis.
My kindergarten students come from families who are living way below the poverty level. The parents of my students struggle to feed their children and send them to school with the basic necessities. My kiddos are starved for attention, education, and rewards. Many of them never hear how wonderful they are doing and they are never rewarded for a job well done.
My Project
I constantly tell my students how wonderful they are. I also explain to them how their hard work will help them to become successful future learners. I am teaching them to read, write, and build their number sense. I would like to reward them with a little treat every once in a while also. I would like to fill two toy vending machines with different types of little toys. (Imagine the little 25 cent toy machines at the grocery store.) I want to fill the machines with different types of toys, including rings, yoyo balls, and sticky hands. I will give students a token for meeting specific goals, such as learning sight words, learning basic math facts, and having excellent behavior. They can use their tokens to choose a prize in order to help build their sense of joy and fulfillment.
Please help me bring these items into my school and into my classroom.
You have no idea how a little 25 cent toy can mean so much to a child who has very little. They will feel good about learning and strive to learn more each day!
