My students need to upgrade a lot of their small percussion instruments. Replacing our worn out guiros, tone blocks, bongos, maracas and chimes and adding to our collection will be great!
The music room at our school is always buzzing with activity. I have about 400 little musicians in grades K-6 who love to listen to music, sing, dance, and play instruments. We see each other only once or twice a week, so we want to make every minute count!
Our school is a Title I elementary building.
I work with great kids and AMAZING colleagues. Our kids are eager to learn and are always looking to impress. We are a National Blue Ribbon School and a Title I School of Distinction. Our school is in a suburban setting, in a district with 6 elementary schools. My building has the highest poverty rate in the district (near 50%), but also consistently gets the highest test scores.
My Project
My little musicians love coming to music class. Their favorite days are when they come in and see instruments set up to play! We love to use instruments to reinforce our ability to keep a beat, to add sounds to stories, and to practice reading music notation.
Unfortunately, many of our instruments are older than this middle-aged teacher!
Our guiros and tone blocks are split down the middle. Our chimes strings have frayed, and we're missing several bars. Our bongos come apart when we play them. We need to upgrade these instruments to keep our Percussion Parade going! We also would love to add to our instrument collection, bringing in new instrument sounds including Thunder Tubes, a slide whistle, and Woodpeckers.
These instruments will brighten the music room visually and aurally. My students will embrace the opportunity to incorporate them into our music class activities. Expressing themselves through music is already a joyous occasion, even with our old, broken instruments. We hope to be able to breathe new life into our activities with new instruments soon!
