My students are a diverse group of outstanding young people. They love learning to play musical instruments and are excited about growing our band classes this year.
My band and percussion ensemble students are from a small rural community and have a wide range of backgrounds and needs including trauma, special needs, English language learners, and those who are just doing their best to navigate growing up.
Despite any differences, each student contributes to the class environment in meaningful ways. Together, they form a tight-knit and supportive community. They are a joy to teach and watch grow together.
My Project
When I inherited this music program this year, I discovered our percussion instruments were in a state of neglect. Instruments such as timpani, chimes, tam-tam, and xylophone were missing mallets to play them. What we do have shows signs of advanced age and wear and students are unable to play the instruments as intended or produce the correct sounds.
New mallets will enable my percussion students to play the instruments correctly and for all of my students to hear them as the composer of their music intended.
Having quality functional equipment will also give students a sense of pride in playing their instrument that is hard to find when using equipment that barely functions or for an unintended purpose. Proper mallets for the instruments will help preserve the playing surfaces for many more years than would happen with worn and hardened mallets. This will enable students to utilize the instruments longer.
