My students need some percussion instruments (musical spoons, maracas, and claves) to be replaced due to the repeated usage by all the students in the school.
Although I am a proponent of technology, I also believe that there is great value in providing my students with hands-on opportunities to hold and play "real" instruments. You can see magic taking place when their bodies make connections to music through the tactile and aural senses. Go acoustic!
My students come from varied backgrounds.
Although, the school is a Title One school, the students are eager learners and love coming to school. Many of them do not have outside music experiences so the only time they listen, move, sing and play to quality music is in my classroom.
My Project
My music students love to come to music class where they know that they will listen, sing, move and play to a variety of music. Their favorite activities include performing on percussion instruments. These instruments get a lot of handling from Kindergarten all the way through 4th grades. The percussion instruments are well-loved! My music class sizes are due to increase dramatically over the next two years and I am trying to adjust my classroom materials to accommodate the increase in numbers. I currently need to replenish my maracas and claves. I would also like to add a few musical spoons to provide more playing opportunities to my classes with larger numbers.
I have been teaching here for 32 years and want to continue to provide meaningful experiences for my students.
In order to do that, ample numbers of quality instruments are necessary. The students only see me for music once a week. When they are with me, it is vital that they hold and play real instruments in response to music. This requires continual replacement and updating of the instrument inventory.
