I teach K-6 general music and 5th grade band at a school south of Seattle where 89% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. A majority of our students are bilingual and thrive off of bringing different cultures into our music classroom. I will strive to provide music education that everyone can access, understand, and enjoy.
I came into my classroom this summer as a first year teacher, realizing that we are lacking in many materials in order to create an equal and opportune access to music education.
My goal is to create a fun-filled, functioning and equitable classroom for my students.
I am passionate and determined about providing these kids what they deserve in order to achieve success in the music classroom.
My Project
Over 3/4 of our students are on free and reduced lunches. Our students are not able to afford renting instruments through music stores. We have drum sticks to send home with our percussionists, but no instruments to play in class or at home! We were able to obtain wind instruments for all of our students to play in class and to take home to practice to give them the best shot at being successful in music possible. We would like to provide that same opportunity for our percussion students.
Our percussionists deserve the chance to become well rounded musicians by having access to mallet instruments, a glockenspiel and xylophones, that they can practice in class and take home.
At the moment, we have pianos for percussion and two drum to share between three bands! Part of being a percussionist is being able to play not only drums, but melodic percussion instruments, as well. We want to provide the best music education possible in hopes that these students will continue on in music in middle school. We must be able to provide them with the instruction on mallet instruments before going to middle school band next year!
