Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are unique, passionate, and full of excitement. They are the reason I love my job and why I wake up ready to work every day. Most of my students come from a background of poverty, and many of them face a sense of disillusionment with school. They face difficulties outside of school that many adults cannot begin to imagine.
Despite the difficulties they face, my students have a desire to learn and they demonstrate that every day in the classroom.
They ask insightful questions and make connections with what they are learning. They strive to be better learners and better people. It is my mission to give them the tools and skills to become all they want to be.
My Project
Oftentimes, the study of U.S. history focuses on a people that my students cannot understand. Research shows that when students are surrounded by books filled with characters and people who don't look like them, then they will feel disconnected. Instead, a more effective strategy is to provide students with a wide range of resources about the diverse group of people who contributed to American history.
The purpose of this project is to give my students historical books about people with the same ethnic background, culture, gender, and age as them.
These books will help me create a culturally relevant classroom where my students feel welcome and comfortable learning about a wide range of historical figures and experiences.
Books like "Black Heroes of the American Revolution" and "The Displacement of Native Peoples" provide a variety of cultural experiences. Books from the "Who Were" series will give all my students a story to connect with and will help them learn about U.S. history in a new way. All of these books will be used to give students a view of how many different people contributed to the history of our country!
