Help me give my students the opportunity to work as a team to build amazing structures. These planks will help my children gain an understanding of balance and proportion and foster an interest in architecture, building and design.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a school that celebrates diversity. Our children come to school with an ability to rejoice and support each other's abilities, gifts, differences, and needs. They are quick to help someone in need and give words of encouragement and support to other children. They are so accepting of people with differences, we actually have parents request a waiver to let their child come to our school.
My children and I celebrate inclusion and embrace the opportunity to work alongside each other.
I teach in a library and service children from PreK through 5th grade. This project will reach 600 children. The school is located in a low socio-economic area with 100% Free Breakfast and Lunch. Three-quarters of my children are Second Language Learners. I truly believe that this project will help build confidence, language skills, and background knowledge.
My classroom is about giving children the opportunity to build on previously learned skills and to introduce them to skills they might not otherwise encounter. We work daily to build relationships, work as a team, and enhance our social skills of speaking, listening and responding. We celebrate little wins together each day.
My Project
These planks will give my children the opportunity to design, build and create their own structures. I just recently decided to add some STEAM (Science+Technology+Engineering+Art+Math) activities to the media center and learned they love to build things. I have designated half of the library to these activities...I have space, now I just need the activities. I have been using recycled materials, but would love to add more materials that are not perishable.
The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of and competency in the properties of building and design and foster their creativity.
There is no right or wrong, thus eliminating the stress of "getting it right"! All children love to create, some are just a little more hesitant than others. With this project, my children will work in teams and will be asked to think about a design, draw it, discuss possible outcomes, build their structure, and then analyze what went right/wrong, and how they could make it better.
It's amazing how hands-on activities can spark a student's interest in something they might never have considered or even known existed. I have no doubt this project will produce some mini-engineers, architects, and builders.
