Pens, Pencils, Paper - Oh My!

My students need pens, pencils, notebook paper, as well as dry erase markers, erasers, and assignment planners.

My Students

My students are all second-chance kids. They arrived at this program because they stopped attending an old school, got pregnant, became involved with drugs or gangs, or encountered violence at school and needed to get out.

Most of my students are over-age for their grades and wouldn't be able to graduate without switching into an alternative program like this one.

We are not a dumping ground for "bad kids"; we are a challenging program with high admissions standards and high expectations of all our students. We keep the classrooms small (a maximum of 15 students, typically 11-12) and provide each student with as much personalized attention as they need to succeed, and hopefully go to college.

My Project

It is unfortunate that, as a small and underfunded program, we frequently run out of even the most basic supplies. Teachers must frequently jog down the hall to borrow paper from a colleague while students squint to try to read the faded ink from old dry erase markers. Students frequently forget to do homework, partly because we cannot provide them with agenda books and they cannot afford to buy their own. Most of these supplies are inexpensive, even in bulk, but once added up they surpass what we are able to afford. We want to provide the best education for our students that we possibly can, which includes giving them the best supplies we have, but right now we simply don't have enough to offer. Without these basic supplies, I can hardly maintain a functioning classroom, much less help my students succeed and prepare for college.

By donating even a small amount to this project, you are telling my students that you care about them and value their education.

My students are amazed by the concept of a website like DonorsChoose and are thrilled by the idea that total strangers would donate money and supplies to them for, as they say, "no reason." If you take a moment to donate just a few dollars, you are helping my students strive for a better future, one in which they can graduate from high school and continue onto college.
