When you were young, were you able to experience the joy of a new backpack filled with brand new school supplies every summer? Many of our students aren't able to afford the basic supplies they need to be successful at school.
I teach high school, special education in a low-income, urban area in Ohio.
Throughout the day, I interact with a variety of students including, special ed, English Language Learners and at risk regular education students. Despite the difficulties they have to overcome, my students are very motivated to do well in high school so that they can graduate and become productive members of society.
My Project
Every summer, my teaching partner and I go on huge school supply shopping sprees in order to purchase the basic supplies our students need to be successful. It is our opinion that if they don't have the supplies for our classes, they won't have them in the rest of their classes so we would rather give them a pen, pencil or notebook of their own so that they are prepared all day then have them borrow for the period and give it back forcing them to ask again the next period.
Our students mean the world to us, and we want to do whatever we can to alleviate their struggle.
If providing them with school supplies can remove one stress and ease the road to graduation and the real world, it is worth it to us.
