My students are enthusiastic and eager learners! They come to school each day excited to see what I have in store for them. I love their willingness to participate and try new things, which is why I am continuously seeking resources that will make their Kindergarten experience unforgettable!
I teach kindergarten in a high poverty rural Oklahoma school.
Many of the students in my classroom come from difficult home situations. I have students that come from traditional families with two working adults, but I also have many that come from families that depend heavily on government assistance, live with extended family members, or are foster children. Because of their home situations, sound financial decisions are not modeled at home for some of them. Many students' families live paycheck to paycheck or barely make it by. My students need to break the cycle their families have chosen as they enter adulthood and learn to make sound financial decisions, but they need to be taught how. Like many students in high poverty areas, my students experience many firsts while at school; including technology. The two reasons mentioned above are why I am submitting this project; so that I can build an early foundation for financial literacy through the powerful tool that is technology.
My Project
The iPad is a phenomenal classroom tool. By purchasing quality learning apps, I can enhance my school's curriculum and allow students to master learning objectives with ease; all the while, my students will be learning and practicing skills without even knowing it. It's a win-win situation! I teach coin value and recognition, but with this tool, I can find learning apps that will extend our curriculum and lay a solid foundation for becoming financially literate as my students grow up. If this project is funded, I would purchase apps like "Amazing Coins" where students will be able to identify and count mixed change, choose items to buy, and determine whether they have enough money to buy what they chose. Additionally, the app allows students to purchase things they need, like food. This will be helpful as we discuss needs and wants and students learn that food comes at a price and their physical needs should be met with their finances before they buy things they want.
Giving to this project would mean so much to my students.
So many of my students never get to experience any type of technology at home due to poverty situations. They desperately need lessons on financial literacy, even at a young age. Hopefully, they will choose to grow up and put their lessons to use and learn to manage their finances wisely. With your help, you can impact their financial decisions while providing technology that grabs their attention. Thank you for considering our project.
