Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in a full ESL classroom. Many of them come from other countries not knowing a word of English. Our school is over 90% free or reduced price lunch, meaning that for many of my students, school is the only place they can eat a hot meal. The neighborhood my kids live in is riddled with poverty and has a strong gang presence. Many of their parents are undocumented immigrants, and the fear that mom or dad might be deported is constantly hanging over my students' heads.
Despite all they have going against them, my students are bright, caring kids that put 110% of their hearts into trying to learn all the school subjects as well as a brand new language.
They struggle in all class subjects, which is understandable considering some of them are just starting to learn English. My students are extremely hard workers, and the growth they make from the start to the end of the year is a testament to their grit and determination. All students deserve a chance to be nurtured and with caring, kindness, and support, there is no limit to their future success.
My Project
Hands-on experience is the best way for my students to learn real world skills like counting money. What seems like something simple to adults, is brand new and often confusing for my students. Learning the names and value of the coins is often overwhelming. My kids need storage containers to help them organize the play money they practice with. Keeping their supplies organized will help them spend less time struggling to find the right coin and more time actually counting the money. The same idea applies to magnetic letters. My students love using them to build words, but they lose a lot of valuable time fishing around in buckets for the letter they need. More organization will equal less stress and more learning for my kiddos!
