Art will change students and my students need the arts to discover their own potential, as they face many hardships daily, as the school is extreme high poverty. My school is a Title I (100% free breakfast and lunch) school where students face many challenges before even entering the school building.
The students need the arts in order to discover their own potential and to see that there are other perspectives and opportunities outside of their environment.
Art is a visual language and the work they create will help students in all academics, as they will be writing, sketching and designing daily. I hope that the arts will be able to empower students to see their potential.
My students are passionate and striving to better themselves despite the hardships they face daily outside the classroom. I try to create a place of comfort and healthy expression for my students.
My Project
I am thrilled that I will have the professional development opportunity to attend Penland School of Crafts for an amazing surface techniques workshop. "The Art of the Bandsaw Box " will focus on learning the basics of how to cut, glue, and manipulate wood. Exploration of simple surface treatments including image transfers, color and painting techniques, texturing, and surface carving are also highlighted in the class. It will be exciting to share these techniques with my students on my return to the classroom.
Attending Penland is truly a gift, and one that is amazing as an art teacher!
The opportunity to meet with other makers in the field, discuss best practices, and learn skills that will be brought into my classroom is very exciting. The class will be taking place at Penland School of Crafts, which is in a remote mountain top location. I am requesting assistance with the room and board expenses. The projects that will be accomplished in the workshops will have a direct connection to the projects in my classroom. I am excited to share with my students the new skill sets I will be able to develop.
