My students need to be ready for high school! This means that they need to be able to use technology to produce the required work. We are fortunate to have a class set of ChromeBooks, however we do not have the means to print out any of the work that is created. It is all stuck in the cloud!
We have three amazing 7th grade classes and two amazing 8th grade classes at our K-8 school.
Being a K-8, our 7th and 8th graders assume a natural role as models to the rest of the school. Since we are a K-8, our 7th and 8th grade program is constantly developing and coming up against obstacles that have never been considered. Our students are becoming high school ready in a small environment, so that often presents it's own set of challenges.
My Project
In my classroom, there is an old laser printer at my desk that is used for over 150 students plus my own personal use. This printer requires a USB cable - but with the ChromeBooks, students have to share their documents with me, and then I have to pull them all up and print each individually. This way, students will be able to print their own documents to the printer, they will be able to hear the audio speeches to cover those standards, and their assignment templates and old work can be saved out of the cloud on an external drive. An appreciation for writing and all of its purposes increases the ability and desire to write. Students will be able to publish their essays and stories and projects and share with others.
Their creativity and thought will move out of the cloud and into the real world.
Students will be able to print their documents without having to hunt down a teacher to ask them if they can share their document with them so that it can be printed. They will be able to be exposed to each others work, hearing the work of others, and quick recall of templates and assignments that are in a single place (external drive) instead of on several different flash drives.
