This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of the students in my classroom have experienced trauma in their lives, and school is their safe place. They come to school to escape what is happening at home. My classroom serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities.
The typical student in my class struggles with basic phonemic awareness and letter recognition.
About 90% of my students are African American or Latino. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population.
My Project
I am requesting a heavy duty pencil sharpener, and some special pencils to give to my students. We go through pencils very quickly in our kindergarten classroom. It is what I spend the majority of money on. We can not function without sharpened pencils. It is one of the most important supplies that we use.
I am requesting a heavy duty pencil sharpener to help cut down on the time we spend sharpening pencils.
I am hoping that I can designate some students to be our pencil sharpeners now that we are a but more understanding of how to be helpers in kindergarten!
